Sana’a, Yemen – On May 23 2011, violent clashes started in Sana’a between government security forces and the partisans of Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar in Hasaba neighborhood. The exact circumstances of the beginning of the clashes are still unclear but the violence of the fighting quickly increased with the use of heavy artillery by both sides.

Many houses have been destroyed, most of them owned by civilians. The area is completely blocked and controlled by al-Ahmar’s men. A “war zone” that now looks more like a ghost town.
